A sloop is a sailboat usually with one mast and fore-and-aft rigged sails. It can also describe a square rigged sailing ship of two or more masts which is sometimes called a sloop of war. The French called them corvettes. Originally the definition of a sloop was vague.A book said sloops "are sailed and masted as men's fancies lead them, sometimes with one mast, with two, and with three.".

“A Sloop Of War” is a great book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. In my opinion, the language used in the book finds the right balance between the old-fashioned, often lengthy figures of speech that were common some centuries ago, and the laconic, straight-to-the-point manner that is typical for modern speakers and many contemporary books/5(88).

Sloop of War is filled with action and intrigue. The author paints a vivid picture of the men and of the time during the age of fighting ships under sail. This is a story well told and the author leaves us wanting more/5().

"Sloop of War" follows the appointment of Lieutenant Bolitho to command his own ship, HMS "Sparrow." Of all the first four "Bolitho" novels, this one is my Sloop of War book to date.

Especially for any former military officer, there is something irresistable about reading about an officer's first independent command/5(). In the Sloop of War, we find a young recently promoted Captain Bolitho with his first command. This series has continued growing in drama, story depth and action.

Our new Captain Bolitho must demonstrate his command skill to a new crew, and, navigate all of the challenges set up for him in command of a sloop at war/5(81). A Sloop of War is a historical nautical war story that is predominantly masculine in nature.

Here ladies occupy the backstage and in many cases only referred to or remembered. The thing that I loved about the book was its historical angle that included some of the facts and the books that I had read about/5.

The book starts injust after the previous book left off. The American War of Independence is still in progress. It describes Bolithos promotion from a lieutenant in a ship of the line to commanding the titular Sloop-of-War Sparrow/5.

Rigging. A sloop-of-war was quite different from a civilian or mercantile sloop, which was a general term for a single-masted vessel rigged in a way that would today be called a gaff cutter (but usually without the square topsails then carried by cutter-rigged vessels), though some sloops of that type did serve in the 18th century British Royal Navy, particularly on the Great Lakes of North.
